NCDE Conference 2011

Nordic Conference in Development Economics 2011 -Copenhagen, Denmark


The Development Economics Research Group (DERG) at the University of Copenhagen and the United Nations University-World Institute of Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) are jointly organising the 2011 Nordic Conference in Development Economics (NCDE11) to be held on 20-21 June 2011 at the University of Copenhagen. The conference aims at bringing together Nordic and international scholars for exchange of ideas and discussion of recent results within theoretical and applied development economics research. The Conference is an annual event in the Nordic countries and this year features two prominent keynote speakers and a special session on trade and industrial policy. All participants must cover their travel and accommodation costs, but the organizers will help facilitate contact with a hotel in central Copenhagen where reduced prices will apply.

Keynote Speakers:

Professor Howard Pack, Professor of Business and Public Policy, Economics, and Management, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA. Topic: “The Evaluation of Industrial Policy”

Professor Tony Venables, Professor of Economics and Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies, University of Oxford, the UK. Topic: “Natural Resources and Development”

The special session on trade and industrial policy will be organised together with Dr John Page, Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution, and formerly Chief Economist for Africa and Director, poverty reduction at the World Bank. Dr Page is presently external UNU-WIDER Project Director for the joint Brookings-UNU-WIDER project on “Learning to Compete (L2C): Accelerating Industrial Development in Africa”

If you wish to participate (register) please send an email as soon as possible and no later than 1 May 2011 including your contact information (name, affiliation, telephone and email address) to:  Christel.Brink.Hansen@econ.ku.dk.
Please specify whether you wish the organizers to facilitate contact with a hotel and if you wish to present a paper or to participate without paper.

Papers must be submitted in electronic form via email (as a pdf file). The paper submission deadline is 1 May 2011. All submitted papers will be reviewed prior to acceptance for presentation. The organizing committee expects to finish the review process on 22 May 2011 and will notify you by email of the outcome. Shortly after a final programme will be put together and posted on the web. It will include a conference dinner on 20 June.

All participants may be requested to serve as discussants.
