"A Boatlift Across The Mediterranean. Refugees in Italian Aging Communities"
Abstract
This study provides novel evidence on the effects of a sudden influx of refugees on population and employment dynamics. In contrast to previous research that primarily examines the impact on large urban areas, this study focuses on the effects on small, peripheral, depopulated, and aging communities. In particular, we examine the impacts of two boatlifts that occurred in the late 1990s, bringing Kurdish refugees from Turkey and Iraq to the towns of Badolato and Riace in Calabria, the southernmost region of Italy. Using the Synthetic Control Method to rigorously evaluate the impacts of these refugee arrivals, we uncover positive effects on both population and employment, highlighting the potential benefits of integrating refugees into the local economy. Our findings suggest that, while challenges exist, the arrival of refugees can present an opportunity for economic and demographic revitalization in small, aging communities.
