Denmark must invest in basic research that creates the breakthroughs of the future
The leaders of 16 Centers of Excellence supported by the Danish National Research Foundation, including CEBI Director Claus Thustrup Kreiner, call on the Danish government and Parliament to secure new funding for the Foundation.
They argue that long-term investment in fundamental research is essential for Denmark’s ability to generate scientific breakthroughs, attract and develop top research talent, and address both current and unforeseen societal challenges. The authors highlight the Foundation’s Center of Excellence programme as a key contributor to Denmark’s strong international research position. Its long-term funding enables ambitious research environments, international collaboration and the development of new generations of researchers, while also contributing to innovation and society more broadly.
Without recapitalisation, they warn, Denmark risks losing momentum in areas where it currently excels. The authors therefore urge policymakers to view renewed funding for the Danish National Research Foundation not simply as support for researchers, but as a long-term investment in Denmark’s knowledge, resilience and capacity for future innovation.
