Penn World Tables
Penn World Tables is a large international database with macroeconomic time series. The special force of this database is that data are easy to compare because they have been converted to the same currency. The new version of PWT 6.1 and 6.2 is very user friendly.

Penn World Tables 6.2: data for 188 countries covering 1950-2004 (base year 2000).

Penn World Tables 6.1: data for 165 countries covering 1950-1998 (base year 1996)

To get started: Go to "Penn World Table" and choose either "PWT 6.1"  or "PWT 6.2" .
Help functions are conveniantly placed.

For the older version of PWT 6.1, if you prefer an excel version:
Follow the link on PWT to "previous downloads". Choose "PWT 6.1" or "National Accounts". Decode the country codes in the link to "Country codes" and  variable codes in the two "Variable list" links. The database, which opens in an Excel arc, is very big.
Problems with the excel version: It may vary from pc to pc how data are opened,  some times you have to save the file on the desk top, and then open it as an Excel arc. If the database looks strange when opened it may be because it is comma separated. This can be solved when the file is opened in Excel: mark column A (which contains data), go to Data, Text to columns, and follow the guide (choose comma as a separator)  to convert data so that they are spread nicely in the sheet.
